The Watchtower is a tall building shell that has 4 floors including the roof and can be equipped with both Turrets and Harpoon Turrets on the roof. It is commonly used for base defense due to the large height bonus it provides to turrets.
Due to the nature of its design it can be implanted into otherwise completely unusable terrain, such as cliff-sides or even consuming entire natural formations that other structures straight-up cannot be built on, near or around, making it a spatially conscious structure in tight or uninhabitable terrain.
It is also considerably more expensive than all other structures, some by more than double, save for the Outpost structures. If resources are scarce, building cheaper, larger, flatter structures in open terrain may be preferable if available.
Players can construct this building after researching Large Building Shells. Not that it matters in game, but the Watchtower has the highest building condition of all the Building types. It would have made perfect sense had engines of war been introduced to Kenshi.
Bugs[]
From the Build Menu, selecting Watchtower Blueprint and setting the Floor to (roof height), you can slide it off of an already made structure until it suddenly "snaps" to the ground and provides an extremely brief window in which the Watchtower can be placed anywhere regardless of collision from any angle. However, the entrance will typically fall a minimum of one-floor below ground, making it impossible to enter.
