Skimmers are large, hostile insectoids native to desert climates. They resemble four-legged antlions with tall antennae and a fanged mouth which they use to feed on corpses. They spawn primarily in and around The Great Desert and are highly aggressive, making them a hazard for new characters starting in the United Cities. Samurai gate guards can frequently be found battling the large pests, usually dispatching them with ease using their polearms. As Skimmers are generally slower than a player character, kiting them to gate guards can be an effective way to get food and cats in the very early game.
Skimmers can spawn in Skimmer Nests and Small Skimmer Nests in Heng, Skimsands, and The Great Desert. While sleeping in a nest, Skimmers are buried in sand and hard to see, and may ambush an unwary passer-by. They can be detected by carefully looking for their white faceplates poking through the sand.
If one Skimmer spawns alone it will hunt without resting. However, Skimmers from nests and larger squads will conceal themselves under the ground to sleep from 6:00 to 23:00, only waking up before then if something walks too close. Once awoken (during the day) Skimmers will go back to sleep after wandering for around 140 in-game minutes, provided they are not in combat.
Bodyparts of adults have around 200-250 HP. Their attacks damage a single target.

Damage Calculations[]
These values are for when striking a target with 0% damage resistance. Usually, animals can have one of three qualities for their "weapon", but Skimmers are different. (Moving their position in a squad, saving and then reloading can change to another quality of the weapon) Their "weapon" provides them with 23 cut damage which is unaffected by stats.
Variant 1
Cut = 23 + 0.84006 (Martial Arts + Dexterity)
Blunt = Martial Arts (0.013) + Strength (0.039)
Variant 2
Cut = 23 + 0.85332(Martial Arts + Dexterity)
Blunt = Martial Arts (0.026) + Strength (0.078)

Trivia[]
- Skimmers are extremely vulnerable to Desert Sabre, making it a good weapon to defeat them.
- Skimmers are nocturnal animals.
- When Skimmers are buried in the sand, they are actually sleeping.
- Skimmers make the same sound as the Spiders do.
- Skimmers are the only animal which use unknown quality weapons, meaning they only have 2 qualities.
- A vast majority of most animal damage is from pierce damage which is not affected by quality so this is not that big of a deal.
