It is a place of penance and education for the less fortunate, for those who have lost their way from the path. We help them find Okran in their heart so that they can live a life of higher purpose and redemption. It is a place where they can be reborn once again, as children of Okran.

–Paladin, introducing the player to Rebirth

Rebirth is a labor camp in the pit of a large mountain where The Holy Nation sends criminals for punishment and repentance. All races can be present here, except for Skeletons[1], as The Holy Nation does not consider them to have a soul. It is located in an eponymous region north of main Holy Nation territory.

This place functions as a concentration camp for religious re-education and penance, where the imprisoned are to perform various labour tasks to build and maintain a statue resembling either Okran or Phoenix presumably for the remainder of their life, although it's suggested that the sentencing for some is temporary and could be let out once they are deemed to be cleansed sufficiently[2][3][4].

Much like other prison camps in the HN, this camp is established for religious reasons and a place to organize prisoners. The camp houses various undesirables such as hardened criminals[5][6] and border trespassers[7], the prevalence of Sheks in this area suggests that many were raiders of various Shek factions such as Shek Kingdom, Kral's Chosen and Berserkers[8].

Interestingly, HN doesn't consider Rebirth to be a practice of "slavery" in the typical sense, unlike the more widely practiced forced labor driven by greed and exploitation (specifically by United Cities and their partners), their system exists solely for the purposes of punishment, societal correction, and moral rehabilitation. In these facilities, inmates are subjected to grueling work routines and ideological reconditioning, framed as a necessary path towards redemption and reintegration in the afterlife, insisting that this model is necessary for upholding justice and order, even as the most prominent critics abroad decry it as little more than a sanitized guise for institutionalized bondage.

Players can sell or donate characters to Rebirth Shopkeep. Non-player characters, such as Fishmen, Cannibals or Bandits, will be accepted for a price of c.500 if the player specifically asks for compensation, otherwise it will yield +1 reputation with The Holy Nation.

Players can potentially gain recruits by unlocking cages and shackles, depending on the personality of the inmate in question.

You can start your game in Rebirth with two non-Skeleton characters if you choose "The Slaves" game start.

Trivia[]

  • If the player was enslaved by The Holy Nation or the Slavemongers, they will be sent here.
    • Due to Slavemongers being supposed to be a removed content, they would just stand idly without doing anything.
  • Although lore-wise Skeletons are not supposed to be enslaved, gameplay mechanics would still make the HN enslave or imprison any Skeletons nearby.
  • Flotsam Ninjas aid the escape of slaves, as could be seen in the shack ("Flotsam Safehouse") right north of it.
  • Bast's dialogue would indicate that their youngsters were captured and sent here.
  • Maril's Diary Series is in large part related to this area.
  1. "The Slaves" Game start has all races except for Skeleton
  2. "She will need rebirthing until she can behave with holiness and piety" - Holy Nation Gate Guard
  3. The term "Rebirth" is ambiguous or circumstantial in what its actual meaning is supposed to be, as depending on the context it could mean "Reborn as a human in the next life", or "Reborn (as in conversion and regeneration) in this life"
  4. The term "Rebirthing" is also ambiguous as it could mean "Re-education", or "the process of reborn into next life"
  5. Holy Prisoner Caravans homeless spawns will take in characters that are in cages (or unconcious, presumably bandits)
  6. Holy Nation Outlaws frequently mention of themselves escaping from Rebirth
  7. An example of border trespassing would be if Hivers and Sheks went into HN town without complying the rule for human escort.
  8. There are Shek raids that are constantly incursioning into Okran's Gulf, Okran's Pride, Border Zone as seen by homeless spawns, although they are almost entirely blocked off by Seta and Phoenix
