Beak Things, also known as Gutters, are among the most dangerous predators in the world and widely feared for their tendency to eat people alive. They are found in many places including Vain, the Leviathan Coast, The Crater, and Gut. Their nests can spawn between 1 and 30 of the much-prized Beak Thing Eggs. These creatures run extremely fast, hit hard, and will eat incapacitated organic prey whether dead or not. They can also spawn as even more powerful Elders (Age 1.9-2.1) in the High Bonefields and Bonefields. Beak Things have the same min and max speed "skill" (170), so athletics has no impact on how fast they move; their movement speed is solely determined by their age. This results in Elder Beak Things having the highest movement speed of any creature in Kenshi.

As Beak Things are very difficult to outrun, low-level characters who cannot defeat them have limited options to survive an encounter. Luring them into another pack of enemies is sometimes an option or running away while constantly juking. But the best option is not to be noticed by them in the first place. Sneaking past them may be possible for characters with moderate skill, especially at night. If discovered simply breaking line of sight and activating sneak again is usually more than enough to get away.

The Beak Thing's penchant for eating prey alive is alluded to in a bar conversation that can be heard in the United Cities, in which two residents discuss an Anti-Slaver raiding party leaving a victim tied up "for the Gutters." If a unit is knocked into recovery coma and a Beak Thing begins to eat it, their best hope for survival is to have another party member fight it or lure it away, as they rarely stop eating before every body part has been consumed from the bottom up. If not knocked into a recovery coma the character will instantly get back up upon being eaten causing the Beak Thing to flee.

Dealing with Beak Things[]

One strategy to kill these creatures is by having one tank/attacker taking the hits, while other members shoot at it with crossbows. If the group lacks ranged weapons, it is wise to surround the Beak Thing from different sides in order to avoid its multiple enemy attack.

The only attack Beak Things have is by swinging their head downwards. It takes quite some time for their attack to strike someone due to their long attack animation, so if a character can move away (NOT sideways, they can turn) from the Beak Thing, they will avoid the attack unharmed. The attack can also be blocked if the block is made for upwards attack.

Like most animals in Kenshi, Beak Thing attacks mostly deal cutting damage, which is very dangerous to let stack up. On the upside, Skeletons can quickly fix the damage if they get hit.

Polearms and Naginatas are fantastic at dealing with Beak Things due to their +50% bonus damage to animals on top of their very fast attack animations. A Falling Sun will also make short work of Beak Things capable of clearing through waves of them provided you are able to wield it correctly.

Damage Calculations[]

These values are for when striking a target with 0% damage resistance. Animals can have one of three qualities for their "weapon". (Moving their position in a squad, saving and then reloading can change to another quality of the weapon) The 23 in the cut calculation is from the minimum cut damage (13) combined with 10 piercing damage which Beak Things have.

Variant 1

Cut = 23 + 0.8774025 (Martial Arts + Dex)

Blunt = Martial Arts (0.039) + Strength (0.117)

Variant 2

Cut = 23 + 0.89232 (Martial Arts + Dex)

Blunt = Martial Arts (0.052) + Strength (0.156)

Variant 3

Cut = 23 + 0.9072375 (Martial Arts + Dex)

Blunt = Martial Arts (0.065) + Strength (0.195)

Trivia[]

  • The typical length of a Beak Thing's neck is approximately 2 meters or 6'7".
  • They can be easily kited due to their long attack animation.
  • Like with all animals (Minus Gorillos, Garrus and Domesticated Bulls) Beak Things have insanely high damage output but are hard countered by armour due to most of it being pierce (Harpoon) damage.
  • In older versions, Beak Things could grow larger than mountains due to a misplaced decimal and had a crest-like membrane behind their heads. They could also speak.
